A Tuesday morning crash at the intersection of Ridge Road and Route 522 left a township woman dead and two others injured.
According to police, Elsie Casey, 67, of South Brunswick was driving a 2001 Mercury Sable on Ridge Road about 10:15 a.m. when she went through the intersection with Route 522. Police said she allegedly disregarded the red light at the intersection.
Her vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a 2009 Toyota Rav4 being driven by Kendall Park resident Henry Eichler, 69, who was driving west on Route 522, according to police.
The collision pushed the Mercury into the westbound lanes of Route 522 and the Toyota came to rest on the concrete barrier between the travel lanes, police said.
Ms. Casey was removed from her vehicle by the Monmouth Junction Fire Department and transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick by an EMS crew from that hospital and was pronounced dead there at 11:17 a.m., according to police.
An EMS crew from Monroe, according to police, also transported Mr. Eichler and his passenger, identified as John Blech, 59, of Kendall Park, to the hospital.
Mr. Blech remained in serious condition Tuesday evening and Mr. Eichler remained under observation in the emergency room, according to police.
The South Brunswick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau is investigating the accident. Police said that there are no plans to file charges in the accident at this time.
The road was closed for 90 minutes due to the crash, according to police.
It was the third fatal crash in the township this year, according to police.
