To the editor:
As our nation prepares to remember the anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks, we should plan to mark the day in a way that brings hope to others.
Sept. 11th is now a National Day of Service. On behalf of the laboratory and transfusion services for Somerset Medical Center, we ask you to remember that blood donation volunteers save lives.
In the hours and days after the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, hundreds of thousands of Americans stood in long lines to donate blood. Many of our neighbors poured into the hospital to lend their support. While the tragic events of that day brought out the best in us, today the need for blood is constant, and more important than ever.
If you haven’t already made plans to take part in the National Day of Service, we invite you to please join us in the Blood Donor Program at Somerset Medical Center. We will be commemorating the day as part of our special tribute to rescue workers throughout the month of September. It was, on Sept. 11, 2001, that we lost one of our faithful donors — a law enforcement officer who, the day before, made it a priority to roll up his sleeve and donate blood. We will never forget his sacrifice and his example in helping others on-duty and off.
Blood donated at Somerset Medical Center goes directly to patients in our community. Each donation offers our neighbors a chance for another day. Please answer the call for service.
