Borough officials have established a task force to clean up the downtown area. It will focus on having merchants keep their storefronts kept up, discouraging loitering and making sure businesses meet borough building and health codes.
Particularly after weekends, Main Street is awash in cigarette butts, liquor bottles, beer cans and garbage on the sidewalk, said Mayor Angelo Corradino.
”We need to make it pedestrian friendly,” said the mayor. “If we don’t, we know businesses won’t come to Main Street and it’s going to be a ghost town.”
The task force consists of the chief and lieutenant of the police department, the fire marshal, Board of Health inspector, code enforcement officer, the director and foreman of public works, the borough administrator and the mayor.
”Our mission is to ensure that ordinances pertaining to buildings and grounds are up to code,” the mayor said. “We are also looking to stop the loitering and littering and will issue summonses and will be present at all court hearings to make sure these violations are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
”Our days of issuing warnings are over,” he said. “It is time for action and it is time for us to take our town back.”
