MANVILLE: Police blotter, week of Aug. 20-26

    A Middletown, N.Y., man came to headquarters at 8:50 a.m. Aug. 20 to report that his 2004 Ford Explorer had been taken from the Adesa Auto Auction parking lot on North Main Street. The vehicle had been there since June 28, and police said neither Adesa nor a towing agency had moved the car. It was entered into the national crime registry.

    At 2:35 p.m. Aug. 20 Adesa Auto Auction employees reported recovering a 2006 Nissan Murano that had been stolen in New York City. Teletypes were sent to police there.

    A group of four men playing the game “manhunt” were standing on the corner of Beekman Street for an extended time, a caller said shortly after midnight Aug. 22. Two Manville men in their 20s were sent on their way.

    A South 13th Avenue woman came to headquarters at 1:37 p.m. Aug. 22 and said that over the last couple of weeks coins and prescription medication, worth a total value of $100, had been removed from her vehicle.

    A state Department of Environmental Protection operator called at 1:55 p.m. Aug. 22 to say department investigators were testing soil in the area of 141South Main St. and discovered a contamination of trichloroethane. A future cleanup is pending.

    A South 14th Avenue caller at 9:22 a.m. Aug. 23 said that overnight someone threw eggs at his 2009 black Jeep. He washed it off and it had no damage.

    At noon on Aug. 23 the rear passenger vent window was discovered broken on a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix that was repossessed and in the Adesa Auto Auction lot on North Main Street since about 7:30 a.m.

    A caller alerted police at 1:54 p.m. Aug. 23 to a possible fight between a man and woman on North Street near the railroad tracks. Patrols couldn’t find anyone.

    A woman turned in a brown wallet found near the intersection of Camplain Road and South 13th Avenue at 6:16 p.m. Aug. 23. The wallet contained numerous cards, a credit card and $18 in cash.

    A man called at 8:58 p.m. Aug. 23 and said he could not find his gray Nissan that he parked on Dakota and South 3rd avenues. Police located the vehicle on South 4th Avenue.

    A North 1st Avenue man called at 7:58 a.m. Friday to say someone was stealing his newspaper, worth $1, every morning and wanted it on the record.

    A North 9th Avenue woman came to headquarters at 6:52 p.m. Friday and said the last evening returning home after being followed there were large flashes of light outside her residence. She felt someone was taking photos and wanted it on the record.

    A 30-year-old man playing ball admitted to breaking a window on a neighbor’s vehicle parked on Haran Avenue after the car’s owner reported the incident at 8 p.m. Friday. The man agreed to pay the estimated $250 in damages.

    Two Manville men, ages 59 and 51, were charged under borough ordinance forbidding consuming alcohol in public at 8:48 p.m. Saturday on South 5th Avenue.

    A woman called police at 9:11 p.m. Saturday Aug. 25 to report that she believed her neighbor was shooting stray animals with an unknown weapon. Patrols responded and spoke to a South 9th Avenue man who was using a paintball gun to scare a skunk from his backyard.

    Sgt. William Yankowski was flagged down minutes before midnight Saturday for a report of a motorcyclist on the side of the road on the Manville causeway. A Hillsborough man was found shaken up after swerving to avoid an animal.

    A woman came to headquarters shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday Aug. 26 requesting to retrieve a bag of property from a friend’s house on South 6th Avenue. Police told her to come back in daylight hours.

    Richard Ogida, owner of Roe Industries on Manville Avenue, reported at 11:46 a.m. Sunday he believed his building had been broken into. He said he was unavailable to meet with an officer but would file a report the next day.

    At 6:48 p.m. Aug. 26 a Dominic Street man reported a theft from his residence. He said that copper pipes had been cut from his basement ceiling and stacked on the floor between 10 p.m. Aug. 25 and 4 p.m. Aug. 26. Estimated loss was $400.

    A man reported damage to his vehicle at 9:20 p.m. Sunday Aug. 26 on South Main Street. Patrols responded and subsequently placed Andre White, 37, of Manville under arrest and charged him with criminal mischief. Bail was set at $1,000, and he was taken to Somerset County Jail.
