NEW HOPE: Town has a new green space

NEW HOPE — New green space is greeting travelers in New Hope.
Traveling along West Bridge Street in the heart of New Hope just got a bit greener, thanks to a project recently completed by the New Hope Borough Revitalization Committee, in cooperation with Glen Stephan, owner of the Stephan House Bed and Breakfast on West Bridge Street, and the borough’s Department of Public Works.
A long narrow strip of rough macadam pavement that had morphed into a hazardous sidewalk over the years has been replaced by dozens of bright green juniper shrubs that have been planted along the more than one half block strip on the northern side of West Bridge Street up to the bridge over the Delaware Canal.
A significant part of the project included the rebuilding of the stone columns that have flanked the street and have been deteriorating for more than a decade. The result: A new green space in New Hope.
Connie Gering, chairwoman of the Revitalization Committee, was clearly pleased. “We have been trying to get this project done for years. The narrow strip of pavement had been used as a sidewalk for many pedestrians over the years, and we have been concerned about safety and about the deteriorating appearance of that area,” said Ms. Gering.
The improved streetscape comes just a few weeks after the borough’s Park and Recreation Board completed the installation of flower baskets along New Hope’s main thoroughfares.
Next week the new Ferry Street bridge will be opened. “It has been a great summer for improvements to New Hope’s downtown,” added Ms. Gering.
