Allentown Native Weatherbee Scores But Hofstra Falls To No. 19 Albany
Albany, NY – Pride sophomore Ciara Weatherbee scored her first collegiate goal but the Great Danes scored twice in the first half and once in the second half as Hofstra fell to 19th-ranked Albany, 3-1 at Alumni Turf Field Friday afternoon. The Pride slipped to 2-1 on the season while the Great Danes improved to 2-1.
Albany got on the board just 4:12 into the contest as senior forward Chantae Miller tipped in a crossing pass from junior Daphne Voormolen for a 1-0 lead. It was Miller’s first goal of the year.
Almost 11 minutes later, the Great Danes made it 2-0 off a penalty corner as Voormolen fired a shot past Pride junior goalie Kaitlyn De Turo (South Setauket, NY) with junior Corrine McConville and graduate-student Jessica Longstreth assisting on the goal at the 15:02 mark.
The Pride closed the gap to 2-1 just before halftime as sophomore Ciara Weatherbee (Allentown, NJ) took a deflected pass from senior Krizia Layne (Arima, Trinidad) and beat Albany senior goalie Kristi Troch from the left side with nine seconds to play in the first half. The goal was the first collegiate goal for Weatherbee. Albany outshot the Pride, 7-4 in the first half with De Turo making four of her six saves in the contest in the first 35 minutes.
Albany added an insurance goal 8:41 into the second half as McConville tallied her first goal of the season-unassisted-to boost the lead to 3-1. Despite the Great Danes outshooting the Pride, 7-2, in the second half, Hofstra had two scoring opportunities in the final four minutes. But Troch, who had three saves in the contest, stopped shots by freshman Lauren del Valle and senior Kerry Kiddoo to post her second win of the year.
The Great Danes outshot the Pride, 14-6 in the contest and had five penalty corners to Hofstra’s two.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, September 2 when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Saint Joseph’s University Hawks at noon.
