CRANBURY: BOE fills vacant seats

By Kaitlyn Kanzler, Special Writer
CRANBURY — Two new members were appointed to the Board of Education this week.
Kim Borden and Pramod Chivate were chosen out of several candidates to replace board members Kathy Wasson and Nicole Pormilli.
Mrs. Pormilli, who’s term ended Aug. 31, accepted a job as the assistant superintendent of the South Plainfield School District.
According to Mrs. Pormilli, she will no longer be able to invest the amount of time necessary for her to be a full member of the board with her change in jobs.
Mrs. Wasson and her family recently moved out of state, causing her to submit her resignation in June.
Business Administrator Joyce Picariello sent a notice in July to residents asking them to submit letters of interest to her by Aug. 10. The board then held interviews at the Aug. 21 meeting where it chose Mrs. Borden and Dr. Chivate to fill the seats.
”We are pleased to welcome Dr. Chivate and Ms. Borden to the Board of Education,” Chief School Administrator Susan Genco said.
Dr. Chivate, who has two children at the Cranbury School, is currently an executive director at Morgan Stanley.
According to Dr. Chivate, he is deeply interested in education and serving the Cranbury community and school district.
Dr. Chivate ran unsuccessfully for the board in 2011 against incumbents Evelyn Span, Kevin Fox and Jennifer Cook.
”I look forward to being part of the team and taking the Cranbury School to the next level,” Dr. Chivate said.
Dr. Chivate said that while there are not pressing issues at hand currently, he looks forward to meeting the challenge of anything that may come up.
Ms. Borden, formerly a human resources director for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC, has been involved with the Cranbury School for several years, serving on the board of trustees for the Cranbury Education Foundation and the Parent Teacher Organization where she is the coordinator for the membership directory.
”I felt it was time to take my commitment to the community to the next level,” Ms. Borden said.
Ms. Borden was also previously on the board of trustees for the Cranbury Public Library and has two children currently in the Cranbury School.
Ms. Borden said she is looking forward to working with the board.
”(These new members) each bring a diverse set of skills and talents that will ultimately benefit the students of Cranbury,” Dr. Genco said. “I look forward to a positive and fruitful working relationship and would like to thank them for their willingness to serve.”
Mrs. Borden and Dr. Chivate will be officially appointed and sworn in at the next board meeting on Sept. 11 in the Large Group Room at the Cranbury School at 8 p.m.
The new members may choose to run for the rest of the un-expired terms next April.
