News Release – Memorial Service For Private Samuel Davis Agin
The General James A. Garfield Camp Number 4 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War as part of its Civil War Sesquicentennial Celebration will conduct a memorial service at the grave of Private Samuel Davis Agin, Company I, 21st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry aka Davis Hagan, Company H, 38th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Private Agin died on August 11, 1915 and is buried in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, New Jersey.
Samuel Davis Agin, farmer, born in Hopewell, New Jersey was mustered into Co. H, 21st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, a nine month’s regiment, at Trenton, New Jersey on September 15, 1862. The regiment was assigned to the Third Brigade, Second Division, Sixth Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. The regiment took part in the following engagements: Fredericksburg, Va., Dec. 13 and 14, ’62; Fredericksburg, Va., May 2 and 3, ’63; Salem Heights, Va., May 3 and 4, ’63; Franklin’s Crossing, Va., June 5, ’63. It was mustered out of service at Trenton, N. J., on June 19, 1863.
On September 12, 1864, he enlisted again, under the name of Davis Hagan, in Co. I, 38th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, a one year regiment, The regiment was assigned to a Provisional Brigade, Army of the James at City Point, Va. The regiment took part in the operations of the Army before Petersburg, Va. It was mustered out of service at City Point, Va., on June 30, 1865, and started immediately on its return to New Jersey, where it arrived on July 4, 1865.
The memorial service will include a color party of uniformed civil war reenactors, a grave-side service conducted by officers of the Gen. James A. Garfield Camp Number 4. Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace played by Camp 4 Brother Mark Falzini, followed by a salute of three gun volleys, and a bugle rendition of Taps played by Camp 4 Brother Joshua Lathrop.
