Police Beat: Sept. 13

Police news from Plumsted, Robbinsville, Allentown

Plumsted

Police report there has been a rash of more than a dozen home break-ins in recent weeks in both the New Egypt and Cream Ridge sections of the township, including a burglary on Brindletown Road on Tuesday, Sept. 10 and a break-in on Ivins Drive on Monday, Sept. 9.
At the Ivins Drive home, the suspect removed an air conditioner from a rear window to get inside the residence, but didn’t steal anything. Police said the burglar may have heard the homeowner returning around noon and fled.
The Brindletown Road break-in the next day also occurred around noon. Jewelry was stolen from the master bedroom, police said.
On Saturday, Sept. 8 police charged three people in connection with previous burglaries at homes on Archertown Road and Hawkin Road, but declined to release the suspects’ names or the details of their alleged crimes, saying it might compromise the ongoing investigations of other burglaries.
The arrests were made following the execution of a search warrant by the township’s detective bureau and with the assistance of the Ocean County Regional SWAT team, according to a statement released by the Plumsted Police Department.
Police reminded residents to keep windows and doors locked on their homes and vehicles and activate alarm systems. Residents are asked to alert police to any suspicious vehicles or unfamiliar individuals knocking on doors because this may be an attempt by a thief to determine if anyone is home.
Anyone with information regarding any of the recent burglaries is asked to call Detective Jason Reilly or Detective Brant Uricks at 609-758-1540.

Police investigating more than a dozen bicycle thefts over the summer in the Foxmoor area have arrested a 35-year-old Holden Way resident and charged him with four counts of receiving stolen property.
At 1 p.m. on Aug. 29, police received a 911 call from a resident of Tasley Court reporting that a man had stolen her daughter’s bike and backpack off her front porch and was fleeing toward Hutchinson Road. Lt. Michael Polaski and Patrolman Shawn Bruton located a man fitting the caller’s description on Holden Way and saw the stolen bike and backpack in plain view inside his residence.
The suspect, Robert McLaughlin, 35, was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters. Detectives conducted a search of his home later that day and recovered three more stolen bicycles and a backpack as well as a Harley-Davidson jacket and helmet recently stolen from a Foxmoor home. The recovered items were returned to the owners, police said.
Lt. Polaski said no other bicycles have been reported stolen since Mr. McLaughlin’s arrest two weeks ago. As of Sept. 11, police had not recovered any of the other bicycles reported stolen in July and August.
”Unfortunately with this kind of property crime it is very difficult to recover previously stolen items,” Lt. Polaski said. Criminals usually sell the stolen items for scrap or pawn them soon after the theft is committed, he said.
”If we recover additional items, we will make contact with the appropriate victims to have the property returned,” Lt. Polaski said.
