During a recent crackdown on drunk driving, police arrested eight people and issued 582 summonses, according to a report released Wednesday.
”Our agency is committed to ensuring the safety of all motorists by removing those who drink and drive,” Chief of Police Raymond Hayducka said in the release. “We partnered with the State and federal government to secure the funding because these patrols make a difference.”
The increased presence was part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign that ran from Aug. 17 through Sept. 3.
Increased uniformed patrols, paid for by a $4,400 grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety allowed the department to put the extra patrols on the road for the campaign, according to police.
The crackdown netted three drunken driving arrests, three fugitive arrests and two narcotics arrests, according to police.
In addition, the 582 motor vehicle summonses issued included 16 people for driving while suspended, 10 for driving without a license and 65 for driving carelessly among other violations, according to police.
According to police, 10,228 people died in 2010 traffic crashes where at least one of the drivers had a blood alcohol content above the .08 legal limit.
