South Hunterdon soccer — The come-back kids: The South Hunterdon Regional High School soccer season got off with a bang recently with both the boys and girls teams demonstrating their resilience.
On Sept. 6, the boys team came back from a challenging first year at the varsity level in 2011 to come from behind in a great win against Sussex Tech.
Down by a goal at the end of first half, South tied the game off a free kick that was headed into the net by Forward Patrick Ferry.
Sussex came back to take the lead again. This was quickly matched by a goal by Left Midfielder Paul Cally.
The game-winner came off a corner kick that was neatly headed into the net by Center Mid-Fielder Zach Mastrich.
The 2011 All Conference Honorable Mention Keeper Jonathan Wendeborn made 13 saves in backing up a much-improved defense.
On Sept. 7, the South sub-varsity girls team swung into action by making a strong case for their move tovarsity in 2013.
The freshmen-heavy squad received a quick schooling by the highly ranked Highland Park varsity squad in going down by five goals before halftime.
Undeterred, South hung tough and was able to notch a goal by freshman Forward Devon Nini at the half.
South kept its momentum in the second half with a goal by Center Mid-Fielder Lauren Wendeborn and two more by Nini for her first career hat-trick.
Goal Keeper Roxy Kreider finished with 12 saves.
