To the editor:
Last month, NJ Monthly downgraded the Montgomery school system to my unpleasant surprise. We have fallen from the 10th ranked school district in the state, all the way down to the 61th. This is a big deal and a major problem. Parents and colleges care deeply about rankings.
About a decade ago, we were ranked second in the entire state. Now we are only fourth in Somerset County. Why has this happened? The Board of Education and past superintendent have done awful jobs.
In the Packet’s recent article, our current superintendent blames the financial problems of a few years ago. I don’t buy that argument whatsoever. Every district had the same challenges. Every district has to deal with the 2 percent cap on property taxes. Bernards and Ridge school systems weren’t impacted. Actually, their rankings improved.
It’s time for parents to take a long, hard look at what is going on with our schools. For the money we pay, which includes $2.5 million in additional spending this year, we deserve better.
There is one other thing that I would like to point out. One of the long-time Board of Education members, Andrea Bradley, is now running for Montgomery Township Committee. I was interested in hearing from her this election, but no longer. I will not vote for someone to run our town that did such a poor job running our schools. She is obviously not up for the job. Once again, we deserve better.
