Manville has two community events coming up in the next weekends.
The annual Community Day will be held Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Lost Valley fields. It is a fun day for the residents to get together and socialize. In 2011, the event was not held as Manville recovered from flooding from Hurricane Irene.
Community Day was started in 2000 by the mayor, Borough Council and the Recreation Department as a way to bring the town back together after being hit by Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
The borough government and the Manville Municipal Alliance will organize this year’s event.
There will be a hot dog eating contest, egg toss, music and a Moon Bounce. There will be free hamburgers, hotdogs, popcorn and cotton candy.
Residents are invited to bring their own T-shirt to be tie dyed in Mustang blue and gold. Local groups will be in attendance as well as the fire departments, rescue squad and police department with apparatus.
Family Health and Safety Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8:30 a.m.-noon in the community room of the Public Library at 100 South 10th Ave. There will be different vendors, screenings and flu shots available for residents.
Susan Star, chair of the Board of Health, encourages residents to come. “The Board of Health has put a lot of planning into this fair, so please attend for information, screening and a flu shot.”
Residents will be able to get flu shots from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be a $5 charge for residents, $10 for non-residents and free for Medicare Part B recipients.
There will also be comprehensive wellness blood screenings, which requires 12 hours of fasting. It will include a complete blood count, and liver, kidney and lipid profiles. The cost for this test is $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents.
Advance registration is required for all laboratory testing. To register, contact the Somerset County Department of Health before Sept. 28 at 908-231-7155.
