PLUMSTED Another year of community education classes is under way, and the Board of Education has publicly shared its support for the mostly volunteer-based, self-funded program that has proved to be a hit over the past decade.
Community education classes, most of which begin in October, offer Plumsted children an opportunity to learn things not offered by the regular school curriculum.
”In New Egypt the school and community resources are united,” said Jeff Pierro, president of the Plumsted Teacher Education Association. “This is a way for the school to give back to the community.”
The classes are run mostly by volunteers from community education groups.
”These are things that go above and beyond the general school offerings that kids really couldn’t get anywhere else,” Karen Jones, superintendent of the Plumsted School District said last week.
The classes include Dance Moves NJ; KidzArt; Hobby Quest: Aviation; Mad Science; Inventing A to Z; United Speed Clinic: Soccer Pre-Kindergarten through First Grade; and United Speed Clinic: Soccer Second through Fifth Grade.
Also, many Overtime Athletics classes are included, such as Big Swing Wiffle Ball and Sports Spectacular for pre- kindergarten through first grades; Girls Club for grades two through five; and Lax-Tastic Lacrosse for grades three through five. Tennis and craft classes will also be available.
Two Dance Moves NJ classes will be offered: the 3- to 5-year-old Creative Movement Combination Classes and Dr. Gerald Woehr Elementary School Funk Pop. The Creative Movement class will be on Mondays and the Funk Pop class will be on Tuesdays. Both are six weeks and cost $68 per student.
KidzArt is also a six-week class and costs $83. It will be held on Tuesdays for New Egypt Primary School students and Thursdays for GHWES students.
Hobby Quest Aviation is a four-week class that will meet on Tuesdays and costs $63. This class is for GHWES students.
Mad Science is an eight-week class and costs $103. It will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays for GHWES students and Mondays for NEPS students.
Inventing A to Z is a four-week class and costs $50. It will meet on Wednesdays for NEPS students.
The Overtime Athletics classes are seven weeks long and cost $78. Wiffle Ball will meet on Tuesdays; Sports Spectacular will meet on Fridays; the Girls Club class will meet on Mondays; and Lax-Tastic Lacrosse will meet on Thursdays.
All of these classes start the first week of October.
The tennis class is eight weeks and costs $120. These classes start this month and are for children in preschool through fifth grade.
Craft classes are also available for $8 to $12. These classes meet once for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade throughout the year.
The classes had to be approved at the Sept. 12 Board of Education meeting because they use the school district’s facilities, BOE President Harry Miller said.
