With the way the Bordentown Regional High School boys’ soccer team played, there may not have been a team in the state able to withstand its offensive on-slaught to start its game against Willingboro High School on Monday, Sept. 17.
The Scotties scored seven goals in the first nine minutes of the game to jump out to an insurmountable 7-0 lead. Willingboro would eventually get on the board with a goal midway through the second half, but it was a moot point as Bordentown rolled to a 7-1 victory.
”We came out on fire,” head coach Mike Brennan exclaimed. “Everything was clicking for us. We looked great in our set pieces and our offense was able to find the back of the net early and often.”
Bordentown got two goals from last year’s team scoring leader Omer Kaya, a junior, and current team scoring leader, Andrew “Doozer” Carey, a senior. Senior Brandon Hudik, junior Zach Brennan, and senior Gabe Brito provided the rest of the Scottie’s offense.
”Omer is a finisher,” Coach Brennan said of his prolific scorer. “All he cares about is scoring and that’s what he does.”
Helping the five goal scorers put the ball in the net were junior Nate Hilbert with three assists, and Stefan Knudson, junior Robert DiPierro, and freshman Andre Justin each chipped in with one assist a piece.
Bordentown’s starting defense stifled every attempt at offense Willingboro threw at them, led by the solid play of Robert DiPierro at left back.
”There’s no real way to document statistically the value of an outside back, but if we’re successful this year, Robert will be a big reason why,” Coach Brennan said.
The Scotties are off to a 3-1 start this year, beating Westampton Tech, Burlington City, and Willingboro. Bordentown’s lone loss cam against Cinnaminson, getting out played 2-0. Coach Brennan’s gang is hoping to avoid a repeat of last season’s 7-10 performance that saw them miss the NJSIAA state playoffs for the first time in over a decade.
”It was kind of a shock to us last year,” Coach Brennan recalled. “We missed the playoffs and that’s not acceptable for a program with a history like ours.”
As of press time, Bordentown was scheduled to continue its post season pursuit on Sept.18 against Delran, followed up by a game against Maple Shade today at home. The Delran game was set to be a good measuring stick on where Bordentown is at among the county’s best teams as the Bears team is considered a threat to capture the Central Jersey Group II crown.
If Bordentown players keeps scoring goals like they did against Willingboro, the Scotties will be a tough team to beat.
