Some $250,000 in renovations and upgrades are now completed at the Kendall Park First Aid Squad building on New Road.
Squad leaders, township officials and others re-dedicated the remodeled structure Wednesday night.
”This is a milestone in our squad’s history,” squad member Rich Goselin said as he opened the re-dedication ceremony Wednesday night. “And is the result of many individual and group efforts.”
The renovations began in April to repair leaks in the roof, expand the bays for the newer ambulances and also build modern restroom facilities that include an area to shower in case of a need to decontaminate, according to Mr. Goselin.
The squad was established in 1960 and now has 45 members and responded to more than 1,700 calls for service last year in both Kendall Park and Franklin Park in neighboring Franklin Township, according to the organization.
It is funded through a $28,000 a year stipend from South Brunswick Township and its annual fund drive, Mr. Goselin said.
According to the organization, 12 residents in the community wanting to provide emergency medical services initially formed the squad in 1960 .
It built its headquarters on NewRoad in 1964 on land deeded to it by the township with the provision that it continue to provide rescue services to Kendall Park, according to the organization.
The structures at the site have undergone previous renovations in both 1964 and 1974 to accommodate expansion and equipment housing.
Mr. Goselin said the recent refit required the squad to take out a $250,000 mortgage with Magyar Community Bank, and that a new capital campaign program is starting so that the squad can fund that new obligation.
Squad officials said that the bank forgave several customary fees on the loan to help keep the plan within the budget.
Donations to help repay the renovation mortgage can be made on the squad’s website at www.kpfars.org.
Mr. Goselin said that various levels of donations and sponsorships are available ranging from $100 to $5,000, but the squad would gladly accept donations of other amounts.
During the ceremony Wednesday, the squad was called to handle two calls simultaneously including a traffic accident with a possible broken collar bone injury.
