Celebrating Mexico
at McCarter Theatre
Centuries of Mexican culture will come to life when Ballet Folklórico de México returns to the Matthews stage of McCarter Theatre for a performance beginning at 8 p.m.
Mexico’s national dance company, Ballet Folklórico de México, is a visual feast of Mexican regional folk dances in whirling colors. Founded in 1952 by celebrated dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernández, the company featuring a company of dancers, musicians and singers incorporates a wide range of rituals, from Mayan and Aztec to modern traditions, all with spectacular theatrical flair. The “Los Angeles Times” raves, “There is enough heat and savvy to make the uninitiated into aficionados.”
Ms. Hernández created original choreography for more than 40 ballets until her death in 2000. Since 1959, the ensemble has performed at the Palace of Fine Arts, the foremost stage for the arts in Mexico City and has presented more than 5,000 performances at home and abroad. Ballet Folklórico de México has received more than 200 awards for its artistic merits.
McCarter Theatre is located at 91 University Place in Princeton. Tickets cost $20-$52 ($10 standing room tickets available for students with valid ID). For tickets or more information, call 609-258-2787 or go to www.mccarter.org
