Shrewsbury 5K Classic set for Oct. 21

SHREWSBURY — The Foundation for Shrewsbury Education (FSE) will host the 18th annual Shrewsbury 5K Classic and One-Mile Any Style on Oct. 21. More than 300 participants are expected to turn out for the day’s events, which include the 5K race, a one-mile race and a kiddie dash.

The race will start and finish at Shrewsbury Borough School, on Obre Place, and runners will be able to visit the post-race expo, where there will be free food, drinks and other goods from local businesses.

The 5K is one of the foundation’s two annual fundraisers, with proceeds going to support the advancement of technology at Shrewsbury Borough School.

Runners can register for the race online at http://shrewsburyfoundation.org or at www.raceforum.com/shrewsbury. Registration for the 5K is $30 in advance, $35 on the day of the race, and the cost of the onemile race is $25 in advance, $30 on race day. The kiddie dash is free and is for children up to 5th grade. Packet pick-up for the race will be Saturday, Oct. 20th, at the Shrewsbury Car Wash, 901 Shrewsbury Ave., which is once again partnering with the foundation as a title sponsor of the race. Registration on race day will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Shrewsbury Borough School.

The One-Mile Any Style race will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K race will begin at 9 a.m. and will take runners on a USATF-certified course through the neighborhoods of Shrewsbury. The kiddie dash will take place at the school at 10:30 a.m. following the awards presentation. Refreshments will be provided to runners at a post-race expo, showcasing goods and services from various local businesses.

FSE is a group of school parents who raise funds to support technology and other educational programs not funded in the school budget. Some of the foundation’s past purchases include laptop computers for student use in the classroom, Mac computers for the computer lab, and whiteboard projectors for every classroom. SBS has recently overhauled the technology infrastructure within the school, allowing FSE to purchase iPads for the classrooms this year.
