SOUTH BRUNSWICK: SBHS senior parking applications available

By Maria Riegel, Special Writer
High school seniors can have the privilege to park on campus during the school year if their application is accepted, according to Assistant to SBHS Principal Richard Mantz.
Fall 2012 Parking pass forms are available on the high school website according to Mr. Mantz, and although the due date states that forms must be submitted by Sept. 7, Mr. Mantz said that seniors can continue to apply for parking passes throughout the first semester.
”The senior parking is an ongoing process,” Mr. Mantz said. “There is a rolling admission throughout the year.”
Seniors parking without a parking hang tag will receive a warning from the school the first time, but if the prohibited parking behaviors continue, students will not be granted the privilege to have a parking pass at a later date according to Mr. Mantz.
Students can lose parking privileges by exhibiting disciplinary or behavioral issues such as detentions, fines, cuts, suspensions, failing grades, and I.D. fine records according to Mr. Mantz. He said that students can also have their parking privileges revoked if they receive an “integrity violation,” and students’ records will be monitored throughout the school year.
”We look at their overall discipline record,” Mr. Mantz said.
All seniors parking on campus in the designated lots must display their parking hang tags on the rear view mirror of their vehicles. If students fail to display their parking hang tag, their parking privileges can be revoked, Mr. Mantz said. Also, if a student transfers their hang tag to another student, their parking privileges can also be lost. In addition, repeatedly being tardy to school can result in parking privileges being taken away, Mr. Mantz said.
All students parking in the upper parking lot must move their vehicles to the other senior parking lot by 2:45 p.m. because of after school practices. If students fail to remove their vehicles, their parking privilege will be revoked, Mr. Mantz said.
Seniors already approved for fall senior parking must pay a $12 online fee in order to receive their hang tag. Payment receipts must be printed out and brought to the third floor office, according to Mr. Mantz.
If a student’s parking privilege is revoked, the $12 fee is nonrefundable.
Mr. Mantz said that because of the online payment confusion among several seniors, the hang tag regulation will begin to take affect Oct. 5.
According to Mr. Mantz, the South Brunswick Police Department does have the authority to ticket senior drivers in the parking lots for various reasons including; speeding (school parking lot speed limit is 15 mph), parking near a fire hydrant or in a loading zone, not having the required red decals on their license plate, and having beyond the legal limit of passengers in the vehicle.
”The police do have the right to ticket students,” Mr. Mantz said. “But as far as we know there have not been any tickets issued. However, the police have given students warnings.”
Mr. Mantz said that police are present in the parking lots and monitor activity of the drivers.
According to Mr. Mantz all seniors with, or without, a parking hang tag must reapply for spring parking in January or February.
”Parking hang tags are good through the entire first semester,” Mr. Mantz said. “All seniors have to reapply for spring parking.”
In addition, Mr. Mantz said that juniors with their licenses are strictly prohibited to park on the Ridge Road campus.
He said that if juniors are found parking on campus, it could affect them receiving senior parking.
At the end of the school year juniors are offered junior parking while the seniors are at Senior Society according to Mr. Mantz.
Mr. Mantz said students submitting a parking application must include a copy of their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and 2011-2012’s quarterly grades.
