SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Vikings slay Old Bridge Knights

By Ed Birch, Special Writer
The South Brunswick Vikings rolled over the Old Bridge Knights Friday night by a final score of 27-21.
The Vikings resorted to its clock-eating running game for the last six minutes of the contest, but for the most part, the Vikings controlled the game.
Vikings stars Dahare Ford, T.J. Taylor, and T. J. Perkowski controlled the offensive game, and a steady Vikings defense kept the home team in the game by stopping many of the Knights scoring drives.
After a scoreless first quarter, Ford scored the first of his four touchdowns in the first five minutes of the second quarter with a two-yard run up the middle.
Within the next three minutes, Ford scored on a 12-yard pass play from quarterback T.J. Perkowski.
Ford ended the Viking scoring attack in the half with just two minutes remaining with a 15-yard power run, sending the Vikings to the locker room with a 21-7 half time lead.
Two big interceptions by Rutgers bound safety T.J. Taylor along with a 64-yard pass reception led the Vikings offensive charge. A third quarter 11-yard run by Ford capped the scoring for the Vikings.
Senior linesman Alex Berkuta anchored the Vikings defense with seven unassisted and two assisted tackles. Dion Hooper and Donte Strickland contributed with four tackles each. Brian Lee and Ken Drost also had big roles in the Vikings defense.
Steady footed Dylan Olssen provided the scoring attack with three point after conversions.
”This was one big team effort of a win. We practiced hard during the week and the results showed it on the field tonight,” Coach Joseph Goerge said. “Although we had great individual efforts from both T.J.’s and Dahrae Ford, this was a total team performance.”
”Three-0 will not make the playoffs yet, we need to keep up this level and bring on another good showing next week on the road at Edison High School,” Coach Goerge said addressing his team following the win.
Quarterback T.J. Perkowski and receiver T.J. Taylor have been working as a receiving team for the past six years during their days in Pop Warner Football.
”It is a great feeling just looking up field and knowing that T.J. (Taylor) will get himself open to make the big play for our team,” Perkowski said.
Taylor refused to take credit for being the star of the game by pointing out that “this win was all about us. We all won this game, not just me.”
Perkowski leads the team with seven (four rushing and three passing) touchdowns and has passed for 417 total yards at this point in the season.
Taylor has been credited with 393 total yards gained so far this year. Ken Drost leads the defense with 17 tackles closely followed by Alex Berkuta with 14.5 tackles.
The Vikings travel to Edison High School for tonight’s contest at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
