The New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL) Celebrates Banned Websites Awareness Day
Partners with American Association of School Libraries (AASL) to highlight censorship awareness
Trenton, New Jersey n September 27, 2012 n The New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL), the professional organization for school librarians in the state of New Jersey, today announced its support of Banned Websites Awareness Day, in promotional partnership with the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). Together, NJASL and AASL ask school librarians and educators to promote an awareness of how restrictive filtering can affect student learning.
The first Banned Websites Awareness Day, created as an extension of the observance of Banned Books Week, was held on September 28, 2011. It was established to raise awareness of the overly restrictive blocking of legitimate, educational websites and online social networks in schools and school libraries. The aggressive filtering of information, often extending beyond the requirements of the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), deters students and educators from further enhancing learning experiences.
“Censorship is a serious issue in our schools and school libraries today,” remarked Amy Rominiecki, Board President of the New Jersey Association of School Librarians. “And as a result, students, teachers and school library media specialists are often being denied access to educational websites and social sites. Our promotional partnership with AASL and our support of Banned Websites Awareness Day reinforces NJASL’s commitment to ensure that students and school staff become effective users of information. “
