Police are searching for two men who entered neighboring homes on Johnson Road off Brunswick Pike through unlocked front doors around 2 p.m. Sept. 26, stealing a checkbook from one house but nothing from the other house.
A 19-year-old resident of one of the houses that was entered was in the bathroom on the second floor when he heard footsteps on the stairs around 2 p.m., police said. He looked out of the bathroom and saw a man standing in the hallway.
The victim asked the man what he was doing, and the man replied that he thought the house was for sale and that he was looking at it, police said. He walked down the steps and out of the house.
A few minutes later, the same man was discovered inside a neighboring house by the woman who lived in the house, police said.
When she challenged him, he walked out of the house and into the backyard, police said. She followed him, and found her husband talking to another man. The second man told her husband that he was waiting for his boss and that he had been sent there to check the property because a neighbor was planning to install a fence.
The two men walked out of the yard and left the area.
