MANVILLE: 50 flu shots are given at first health fair

The first Manville Family Health and Safety Day was held Saturday at the Manville Public Library in the community room.
There were vendors, screenings and flu shots available.
”The first Manville Health Fair had a decent turnout, and a lot of residents came for the flu shots,” said Susan Star, chairwoman of the Board of Health. “We had vendors to inform people about different things that are available.”
About 50 people got flu shots from Visiting Nurses of Somerset County.
Those who participated included the Somerset County Office of Aging, the Manville Senior Center, the Hiller Chiropractic Center, Somerset Medical Center Diabetes Center, Franklin Family Eye Care, Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation, Compassionate Care Hospice and Cancer Support Community.
There were massages by Dr. Vincent Sferra of Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation, a cancer screening by the Cancer Support Community and breast cancer tattoos by resident and breast cancer survivor Sherri Lynn.
There also was a table of information from the Somerset County Department of Health and FEMA.
This effort was coordinated by the Somerset County and Manville boards of health.
”We all put in a lot work, and it seems to be a success,” said Ms. Star.
Making this an annual event is up to the board to decide at its next meeting, but Ms. Star said she would “like to see it move forward.”
