LAMBERTVILLE: Department slates multi-day fire prevention event

The Lambertville Fire Department’s recognition of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week 2012 will be a multi-day event in Lambertville. The week is designed to call the attention of residents to what they can do to prevent fires in their homes and businesses.
The event will feature five evening programs running Monday through Friday. Events are open to residents of all ages.
”Please come out and learn as well as say thanks to the all-volunteer firefighters who are trained and ready to put their lives on the line to save you, your loved ones and your property,” said Lambertville Fire District Chief Matt Hartigan.
Each night the designated station will be staffed and questions will be answered by a trained firefighter. There will be a chance to learn about equipment.
All events will run from 6-9 p.m. and are free.
   — On Oct. 8, the Hibernia Fire Company No. 2, at 38 S. Main St., will provide information and instruction on the need for and proper use of smoke detectors.
   — On Oct. 9, at the Union/Fleetwing Fire House, 230 N. Main St., members of the Fleetwing Hook and Ladder Company No. 3 will provide instructions on and have visitors practice using a fire extinguisher. How many times have you asked yourself “would I be able to use a fire extinguisher, if needed”? Here’s your chance to practice!
   — On Oct. 10, at Family Night, a number of events will take place at the Union/Fleetwing Firehouse, 230 N. Main St. The Saint Barnabas Burn Center Fire Safety House will be there for children of all ages to learn about fire safety. The Safety House is a trailer that recreates a home environment . This allows children to identify and correct everyday household hazards that may lead to fire and burn injuries. The Fire Safety House also simulates a house fire, utilizing non-toxic smoke that allows children to practice their home escape plan. Also, there will be a fire hose use simulation. In addition, a high expansion foam demonstration will be provided and children will have an opportunity to walk in the foam. Snacks will be served.
   — On Oct. 11, the Columbia Fire Company No. 4, at 177 N. Union St., will show off the brand new fire engine and the latest firefighting advancement in the city — the Compress Air Foam System, which is part of the new engine!
   — On Oct. 12, at the Union/Fleetwing Fire House, 230 N. Main St., members of the Union Fire Company No. 1 will review five common household fires and what can be done to prevent them.
   — Oct. 14 is the annual Lambertville Fire Department Inspection and Memorial Service. Starting at 2 p.m., all equipment will drive by each firehouse (Hibernia, Union/Fleetwing, then Columbia) before staging on York Street for the inspection by the Fire Commission and City officials. Following the inspection a special awards presentation to department members and others will take place at Sheridan Park on York Street.
Then the members and their equipment will travel to the Firefighters Memorial in Mount Hope Cemetery, off South Franklin Street. Following the service everyone will go to the Union / Fleetwing Firehouse on North Main Street. There, for the first time, the general public and the firefighters will have a joint dinner, starting at 5 p.m. There is no charge for this event.
All these events have been planned by the 2012 Lambertville Fire Prevention Committee, consisting of Greg Heller, Mitchell Ege Jr. and Cindy Strauss.
Please participate as your schedule allows to learn and say thanks!
