EAST WINDSOR — Public awareness and common sense are two of the key elements of success for Fire Prevention Week, according to a press release from Volunteer Fire Co. 1.
This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7 to Oct. 13, is “Have Two Ways Out,” referring to a pre-planned escape plan in the event of fire.
”Change the battery in your smoke detector, don’t overload electrical circuits, stop, drop and roll if your clothing catches fire, just a few of the other things we all should know and practice,” said Chief Kevin Brink of East Windsor Volunteer Fire Co. 1.
In addition to visiting local schools to bring their life-saving messages to youngsters, the fire department’s Fire Safety Trailer will be on display this Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Home Depot on Mercer Street.
”Accidentally caused fires can often be the most tragic,” says Chief Brink, “and it’s up to us to drive home the message that common sense and awareness of your surroundings can usually prevent a disaster. The last thing you want are big red fire trucks in your driveway.”
The approaching cold weather will see an increase in supplemental heating devices, such as electric heaters. The chief cautions that these units should never be left unattended or turned on while you sleep. All heating devices should be at least three feet away from beds, drapes, furniture and other combustible materials.
”Fireplaces and chimneys should be cleaned regularly as many fires occur because of a lack of regular cleaning, leading to the buildup of creosote, the residue of unburned fuel,” he said.
The fire chief also says that in addition to a working smoke detector, you should also install a carbon monoxide alarm as well, as it provides an early warning to the odorless, colorless and poisonous gas that is created when fuel burns incompletely.
