The South Brunswick Vikings overcame a one-point half time deficit to beat the Edison Eagles 37-14 Friday night, remaining undefeated this year.
Quarterback T.J. Perkowski opened up the scoring for the Vikings very early in the contest with a 63-yard touchdown run from scrimmage.
A Dion Harper 34-yard scoring run brought the Vikings to 13-7 at the end of the opening quarter.
Dan Lordi of Edison pushed the football over the goal line with just one minute remaining before halftime to put the Eagles on top 14-13 at the break.
Despite Edison starting the second half on top, the Vikings totally dominated the Eagles in the second half.
Dylan Olsson hit a field goal from 19 yards out to start the scoring, and then T.J. Perkowski connected with Dion Hooper on a 46-yard touchdown pass with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
With just 2:51 remaining in the period, Rutgers bound T.J. Taylor jumped in front of the Edison receiving core, bringing back a 70-yard interception return to give the Vikings a 30-14lead.
Dion Hooper closed out the evening’s scoring with a two-yard dive into the end zone in the final minutes of the game.
”We made some mistakes in the second half but corrected everything at halftime,” Head Coach Joseph Goerge said. “Our seniors showed their maturity and did not panic.”
The Vikings had 276 yards in their rushing attack as compared to just 194 yards for Edison. Ball control proved to one of the keys to victory with the Eagles losing three out of four fumbles during the game.
Alex Berkuta, Austin Moore, and Matt Golden retrieved the Eagles mistakes for the Vikings.
The Vikings rushing attach was led by T.J. Perkowski and Dahrae Ford with carries each, Dion Hooper had six carries for 73 total rushing yards.
The Vikings defense was led by Donte Strickland and Rashaan Baker with six tackles each, and Dion Hooper with five tackles.
South Brunswick will meet the powerful Piscataway Chiefs at 7 p.m. tonight on the road before returning for Homecoming Oct. 12.
