HILLSBOROUGH: Teen landscaper chosen for young entrepreneur award

Thomas Cahill, a junior at Hillsborough High School and owner of Cahill Landscaping, has been selected as recipient of the 2012 Young Entrepreneur Award. presented annually by the Somerset County Business Partnership.
The award recognizes achievement, encourages development of business skills and salutes the entrepreneurial spirit and ideal of community service.
Developing an affinity for tractors at the age of 4, Thomas waited until he turned 13 before fulfilling a childhood dream of business ownership by taking on his first lawn customers. Now in his fourth year in business, he has eight full-time and five periodic clients. He expects to generate $3,000 in sales in 2012 of which 10 to 15 percent will be donated to a charity.
Thomas’s business philosophy is based on three concepts: communication to understand the types of service needed and client expectations; quality to make certain expectations are fulfilled; and service, which includes sending holiday cards to clients to thank them for the opportunity to the work.
In addition to his charitable donations, Thomas organizes groups of young adults to clean up at homes of people at times of need.
“Cahill Landscaping has helped me grow up as a business person learning how to deal with people and as a person feeling empowered to realize that, as a young adult, I have the ability to affect other people in a positive way,” he wrote.
Thomas will receive the Anthony F. Picheca Sr. Entrepreneur Award of $1,000 from the Somerville and Bridgewater Rotary Club at an awards luncheon Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Bridgewater Marriott.
