SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Piscataway Chiefs crown SBHS Vikings 47-14

By Ed Birch, Special Writer
The South Brunswick Vikings could not withstand the constant defensive pressure and a 27-0 second half scoring barrage from the highly motivated Piscataway Chiefs Friday night.
The Chiefs 47-14 wipe out victory in last week’s tri-state televised contest from Piscataway handed the Vikings its first loss of the season.
The Chiefs team came into the contest highly motivated as Chiefs Head Coach Dan Higgins openly was out to settle a score from last year’s Vikings upset victory in South Brunswick.
Higgins was quoted in published reports before the contest, about how embarrassed the Chiefs community felt after South Brunswick fans had “poured onto the field” after last year’s victory.
Before the opening quarter had ended, Piscataway superstar quarterback Nadir Barnwell ran in a one-yard carry to give the Chiefs a 13-0 lead. The leadership of Rutgers-bound Barnwell in the Chiefs offense was simply unstoppable for the previously undefeated Vikings.
The Vikings made their run in the game in the second quarter with quarterback T.J. Perkowsky making touchdown passes of two yards to Dion Hooper and a 12-yard toss to another Rutgers bound player, Vikings star receiver, T.J. Taylor.
South Brunswick went into the locker room at halftime down 20-14, but certainly still in the contest.
Coach Higgins and the Chiefs kept offensive and defensive pressure on the Vikings for the entire second half of the contest as Barnwell connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass to David Claybrook and then running a score into the end zone himself from the five-yard-line.
Kevin Butler of the Chiefs contributed with a 55-yard interception return and running back Jamaal James closed the scoring out with a massive 68-yard scoring run against the dejected Vikings defense.
”They were a very good explosive team” said Vikings Head Coach Joe Goerge. “The game was really a lot closer than the final statistics show. We are not panicking or getting ready to throw in the towel.”
”The pressure did not bother me at all” Vikings quarterback T.J. Perkowski said after the contest. “We have a short memory (and) will bounce right back and start a new winning streak.”
Another winning streak will happen according to Rutgers bound wide receiver T.J. Taylor.
”We will be at the school tomorrow and start reviewing game films and start our preparation for our next opponent, J.P. Stevens,” Taylor said.
Piscataway wanted to strike first to let the Vikings know they came to play.
”We made an early statement as we wanted to be the first team in the game to put up points on the board,” said Chiefs star Nadir Barnwell.
Coach Higgins said he was very proud of the way his team pounded their offense and defense stating “this year we will not be easy push arounds. We will pound our opponents early and often.”
The Vikings next opponent will be J. P. Stevens at the annual Homecoming celebration 7 p.m. tonight at the school on Ridge Road. Tickets may be purchased at the game at game time.
