SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Simon urges seniors to apply for ‘freeze’

State assemblywoman Donna Simon, R-16, came to town Tuesday to let senior citizens know that there is still a week left to apply for the “Senior Freeze” tax program.
According to a press release, the program is available for citizens 65 or older with low to moderate incomes, or those on Social Security disability benefits.
It then pays whatever the increase in property taxes is from when the senior enters the program, according to the release.
The deadline to apply for the program is Oct. 19.
”Senior Freeze provides critical property tax relief to senior citizens on fixed incomes and all eligible seniors should know that there is still time to apply,” Ms. Simon, R-Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer and Middlesex, said. “Our budget provides more than $200 million, or $1,200 on average, to freeze property taxes for eligible senior citizens, which helps them afford to stay in their homes.”According to the release, 11.3 percent of residents in her district are more than 65 years old.
The 16th District covers Branchburg Township, Hillsborough Township, Manville Borough, Millstone Borough, Montgomery Township, Rocky Hill Borough and Somerville Borough in Somerset County; Delaware Township, Flemington Borough, Raritan Township, Readington Township and Stockton Borough in Hunterdon County; Princeton Borough and Princeton Township in Mercer County; and South Brunswick Township in Middlesex County.
Ms. Simon is facing Democratic challenger Marie Corfield in next month’s election.
