Jeanne Calo grew up in Paris but was born in Tunis, Tunisia in 1916.  She returned to Tunisia after marrying and then in 1958 she and her family immigrated to the US.   While holding a French law degree and pursuing a teaching career at Trenton State College, she earned both an MA and PhD.  In 1985, after retiring she enrolled in a few art classes and tried her hand at painting.
Jeanne says “Throughout my life I have traveled extensively and in my still life compositions I make use of the textiles, ceramics, masks and other handicrafts acquired during my travels …..” Although she draws inspiration from these models, they provide only a “jumping off” point for her compositions where size, colors, and relationships are carefully designed in order to achieve the fresh, unique look of her art.
