ROBBINSVILLE — A 61-year-old Hamilton man ran a stop sign and hit a school bus loaded with 29 Sharon Elementary School students on Monday, leaving one second-grader with a minor head injury, police said.
The school bus was traveling south on Sharon Road at 4 p.m., when a Honda Pilot, driven by John Wilno, ran a stop sign on Gordon Road and “broadsided” the driver’s side of the school bus, police said.
Schools Superintendent Steve Mayer said a second-grade boy, who was wearing a seat belt, hit his head on the seat directly in front of him and sustained a minor injury. Robbinsville EMS transported the child to University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, where he was treated and released.
None of the other children on the bus were injured.
Sharon Road remained closed for nearly one hour after the accident so that the children could be moved onto a new bus and the two damaged vehicles could be towed away. Police said several Sharon School teachers came to the accident scene to help police, firefighters and EMS take care of the children.
Dr. Mayer said Sharon School Principal Janet Sinkewicz also came to the crash scene and rode home with the children on the replacement bus.
”The kids were fantastic throughout it all,” Dr. Mayer said. “We made contact with all of the parents so they were informed of what had happened.”
The children arrived home about a half-hour later than their usual drop-off time, Dr. Mayer said.
Police said Mr. Wilno was given a summons for failing to stop at a stop sign.
