STONE COMMEMORATING FESTIVAL TO BE INSTALLED IN LOCAL PARK

Somerset, NJ – October 15, 2012 –  The Franklin Township Food Bank’s CanalFest Planning Committee, established in early 2011, fulfilled its mission for a second consecutive year as the group again presented the Delaware and Raritan Canal Festival (CanalFest) in support of the food bank, raised the profile of area businesses and community organizations, and brought more than a thousand friends and neighbors together in the spirit of celebration.
Now in the wake of the second event, the broad and diverse group will dedicate a commemorative stone as a symbol of their collaboration and a reminder that partnership is the key to strengthening communities. According to CanalFest Co-Chair, Patti Sofran, “our local businesses and residents have been incredibly responsive in making financial contributions, in-kind donations and in providing the many helping hands required to put together such a successful event.” Co-Chair, Michael Steinbruck, furthered that, “the stone metaphor comes from the folk tale, Stone Soup, which tells a lesson of the importance of cooperation, especially amid scarcity.” The tale was read by Steinbruck at the event’s opening ceremony.
Residents, government officials and representatives from businesses, schools and community organizations will all gather together in East Millstone Park for a brief ceremony where the commemorative stone will be installed. Franklin Township Councilman and Deputy Mayor, Phil Kramer, who has supported the effort since its inception, plans to attend the dedication. Councilman Kramer commented that "government should, whenever possible, facilitate the partnership of individuals, groups, charities and business in working towards the greater good. CanalFest is a wonderful example of how these entities can come together for the betterment of the community with minimal cost to the taxpayer." Elayne Glick, Food Bank Fundraising Chair, remarked that “CanalFest has been a welcome new fundraising effort that has gone a long way toward helping our clients during these particularly difficult economic times”.
