SOUTH BRUNSWICK – More than 1,000 people gathered at Crossroads South Middle School on Major Road Friday night to dance and celebrate the beginning of the Hindu Navratri Garba.
The Indian celebration lasts for several nights and combines folk dancing with a religious celebration, according to Mac Shah of the Indo-American Cultural Foundation of Central Jersey.
The organization has sponsored the annual event for 15 years and the festivities will continue Saturday, Oct. 20 as well as both Oct. 26-27 at the middle school.
Several thousand people are expected to attend each night, according to Mr. Shah.
Although it is an Indian festival, all members of the community and region are invited to attend, Mr. Shah said.
The event runs from 8:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. each night and tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors and children under age five are free.
Members of the organization can buy tickets for $8.
