WEST AMWELL — The South Hunterdon Regional Board of Education has approved applying for an $81,962 federal Basic IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) grant for the 2012-13 school year, said Kerry Sevilis. district administrator/board secretary.
The board voted to approve applying for the grant at its Oct. 18 meeting.
If the grant is received as expected, the district would use the money for out-of-district tuition costs.
Many New Jersey districts send students to schools, located outside their districts, to better address special needs.
In effect since 2004, the federal Individuals with Disabilities Act authorizes such grants to districts in states around the country.
The act also allows grants to institututins of higher education and nonprofit organizations to support research, demonstrations, technical assistance and personnel development, all to aid the learning of those with special needs.
At the recommendation of its Building and Grounds Committee, the board also approved payments of $2,627 and $484 to the firm of USA Architect for gym floor work. Also approved was a payment of $20,000 to Preferred Masonry Restoration.
Also approved were Kara Ann Dienes and Irene Amato, who will work for the district as half-time secretaries for the 2012-13 school year. Each will make $12 an hour. Ms. Dienes is to work mornings; Ms. Amato in the afternoon.
Also approved was adding Anna Gillette and Sarah Mohn to the substitute teachers list for 2012-13.
Sponsored by the South Hunterdon’s Parents-Teachers Organization (SHPTSO), the Middle School Masquarade Dance set for tomorrow night (Oct. 26) will kick off Halloween time. The SHPTSO raises money through fundraisers and membership dues in order to sponsor many district events. Among them are the Homecoming dance and festivities, the Winterfest Cafe, Open Mic Night and Battle of the Classes BBQ. and the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.
The SHPTSO also serves bagel breakfasts to high school honor roll students and holds ice cream socials for middle school honor roll students. In addition, it serves lunches to students after Advanced Placement Testing and awards scholarships annually.
