Republican Assemblyman Donna Simon and Democratic challenger Marie Corfield are locked in a tight race in the newly minted 16th Legislative District.
According to numbers released Tuesday night by the four county clerks in the district, Ms. Simon has the upper hand with 41,675 votes to Ms. Corfield’s 39,926 votes.
Ms. Simon declared victory at the Somerville Elks club Tuesday night, according to published reports, but the final outcome may take several days to decide.
Democratic sources said Wednesday that it is not likely that Ms. Corfield would concede such a close race with many provisional ballots still being counted.
Officials said that there may be as many as 1,000 such ballots in Middlesex County alone, and it could be several days before those ballots are tallied.
The 16th District includes Branchburg Township, Hillsborough Township, Manville Borough, Millstone Borough, Montgomery Township, Rocky Hill Borough and Somerville Borough in Somerset County; Delaware Township, Flemington Borough, Raritan Township, Readington Township and Stockton Borough in Hunterdon County; Princeton Borough and Princeton Township in Mercer County; and South Brunswick Township in Middlesex County.
