GCU explores music of WW II

LAKEWOOD — In honor of Veterans Day, Georgian Court University will offer a free and fun celebration with “Lifting the Clouds of War: The Music of World War II,” an interactive lecture with audience sing-alongs, at the Dorothy Marron University Community Chapel on the Lakewood campus on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

Presented by the Department of History, Geography, and Political Science, the duo Down Melody Lane will explore the music of the 1940s, provide interesting facts about music and life during World War II, and ensure everyone has fun while they are learning.

Down Melody Lane vocalist Gilda Healy first began to study music and voice at St. Anne’s School in Jersey City, where she grew up. She is a survivor of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and was an evacuee from the World Trade Center Tower 2. Healy recently published her story of survival: “My First Ten Years as a Survivor: The Real Story.”

For many years, Healy has been an active participant in the music ministry as soloist and choir member at St. Catharine’s Church in Holmdel.

Barry Rosenzweig has been a musician since the age of 8, when he started playing the piano. He received a B.A. in music from Rutgers University and an M.A. in music from Trenton State College. He served two years active duty as a lieutenant with the U.S. Army Field Band of Washington, D.C. He retired in 2006 after 40 years as an educator in New Jersey public schools.
