Eagle-eyed basketball players are welcome to try their luck at the local competition for the 41st annual Elks Hoop Shoot, the national free throw shooting contest for youngsters age 8 through 13 (age determined as of April 1, 2013).
The contest will be held in the gym of the Weston Elementary School, 600 Newark Ave., Manville, on Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 10 a.m.
More than three million youngsters in the country entered last year’s competition for boys and girls in age categories 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals at the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Local winners will compete against other lodge winners in the West Central District event to be held early in January. The district winners will advance to the state finals early in February at South Plainfield High School.
