PLUMSTED — Nearly 17 months after Karen Jones was hired by the Plumsted Township School District Board of Education to become superintendent of schools, a contract extension for the district’s top administrator is being discussed.
The contract Jones initially signed ran from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014.
The board is now seeking to extend the agreement with the superintendent through June 30, 2016, according to Business Administrator Sean Gately.
If a board does not expressly notify a superintendent that he or she will not be reappointed, the contract automatically renews, according to the School District Accountability Act.
Jones was hired as Plumsted’s superintendent following the retirement of Mark DeMareo in June 2011. DeMareo had served the district since 2008.
Jones came to Plumsted from Howell, where she had been working as the assistant superintendent for the Howell K-8 School District.
Under the terms of her current contract, Jones is paid an annual salary of $157,500, which includes a $2,500 annual high school salary increment because the district includes a high school.
She also receives a number of paid sick, personal and vacation days, as well as health and dental insurance at no cost.
The board was expected to discuss the contract extension for the superintendent at its meeting on Nov. 28.
