SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Baby boy born in SUV

A Piscataway family delivered their fifth baby on the shoulder of Route 1 and New Road at 10:55 p.m. Friday, according to police.

The unidentified husband, 43, and his wife, 34, were on the way to the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro for the impending birth of their fifth child, according to police.

With their other four children in the back seat, all under the age of 10, the woman’s husband pulled the Toyota Rav-4 to the shoulder of Route 1, about six miles short of the hospital, police said.

He was then able to wave for help from South Brunswick Patrolman Jamal Benbow who was patrolling Route 1, police said.

Patrolman Benbow arrived on the scene to witness the late stage of the woman’s labor, police said.

Within minutes, the father helped deliver the baby, and the officer wrapped the newborn up, police said.

Just two minutes after requesting an ambulance Patrolman Benbow radioed headquarters and reported that the baby had been delivered, police said.

The Kendall Park First Aid Squad arrived on the scene shortly after and transported the mother and child, both later reported to be in good condition, to the hospital, police said.
