Some of proceeds will help send student to summer festival in Scotland
Do you love making gingerbread houses?
There are two ways to join the fun of the Build It & Bring It competition Sunday, Dec. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Commons of Hillsborough High School, 466 Raider Blvd.
People can make their own house, using gingerbread and any edible treats, and enter it at the show to win the fan-favorite prize.
Or you can buy a kit at the show and participate in the House Wars decorator competition. The kit contains the gingerbread cookies, icing and an abundance of sweet treats. You build the house, and the organizers do the cleanup.
There will be a special School House Rocks category, only open to preschool and elementary school classes.
Half of the money raised from the Ginger Bread Festival will benefit the school’s March musical, “Beauty and the Beast,” and the other half will help send more students to attend a summertime trip to Great Britain and an international stage festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
”Hillsborough High School Theatre has never really done fundraisers in the past,” said B.J. Solomon, director. “We are looking to continue these fundraisers as a way to supplement income for our productions.”
The school’s theater has become known throughout the community for its high-quality theatrical productions with stunning production values, he said. Most of its costumes are rented from the original Broadway productions, and the scenery rivals the Broadway productions, he said.
The theater employs a professional staff of a technical director, costume supervisor and lighting designer, all of whom commute from New York City, he said.
”In the past few years, HHS Theatre has become known throughout New Jersey,” Mr. Solomon said. “We have received 20 Paper Mill ‘Rising Star’ and Montclair Theatre Night award nominations and have won several.”
He added, “All of this was topped off last spring when we were listed in the top 40 of high school theater programs by the American High School Theatre Festival.”
Because of its stature, the school was invited to attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest theater festival in the world with 20,000 productions from professional theater companies around the world coming to Scotland each August.
”As we raise funds, we will be auditioning (Hillsborough) students for the chance to come with us,” Mr. Solomon said. “We would like all of our students to come with us, regardless of their family’s financial status.”
Besides the competitions Saturday, there will be a bake sale and refreshments, live music, entertainment and sing-a-longs. Donations of nonperishable canned goods will be accepted for hurricane relief efforts.
The house competitions are sponsored by Weichert Realtors sales representative Kelly Compher.
Competitions are open to all ages; see HHSTheatre.org for details.
Register online at HHSTheatre.org or drop off the registration in the high school attendance office. Admission is $1 for an individual and $3 for a family. The competition fee is $10, and the House Wars kit is $15.
