Powdery substance sent in mail is brought to police

   A Capricorn Drive resident came to police headquarters Nov. 29 with an envelope with a white powdery substance sent through the mail.
   The unknown substance was in a plastic wrapper, police said. The Somerset County Hazardous Materials Team determined the substance posed no biological risk.
   Local police forwarded the substance to State Police for further testing.
   The resident didn’t know the addressee or the return address on the envelope, police said.
   • On Nov. 25 at about 10:52 a.m. police responded to a report of an assault on Amwell Road. Two men were found to have injuries after allegedly assaulting each other.
   William Owens, 44, of Trinity, Alabama, suffered a cut forehead and Rodolfo Saria, 49, of Hillsborough had a cut hand. Both were treated by Hillsborough Rescue Squad at the scene and refused further medical attention. Neither man wanted to pursue charges and no one was charged.
   • More than $25,000 worth of jewelry was reported stolen Nov. 19 from a Long Hill Road residence during the daytime. The Hillsborough detective bureau is investigating.
   • Snowplow parts worth $2,000 were reported stolen Nov. 19 from a truck parked at a Route 206 repair shop. The theft had occurred during the previous 10 days, police said.
   • On Nov. 17 a Farm Road resident reported $1,853 worth of cash, jewelry and electronics had been stolen from their apartment within the previous seven days.
   • Marek Homanski, 26, of Hillsborough was charged Nov. 15 with driving while under the influence at a Falcon Road residence after police received a complaint of a possible drunk driver in a silver Dodge pickup. His breath test reading was 0.31 percent of blood alcohol, police said. He was released to immigration agents, as directed by state Attorney General guidelines, according to police.
   • Two vehicles on Lewis Street were broken into Nov. 13 and a total of $275 worth of cash and electronics reported stolen.
   • A burglary attempt was reported at a Homestead Road residence on Nov. 7. No entry was gained. Detectives are investigating.
   • Joseph Stravalacci, 55, of Hillsborough was charged with driving while intoxicated Oct. 31 in a Route 206 parking lot after a citizen alerted an officer to an alleged drunk driver trying to leave the lot in a white Dodge. Mr. Stravalacci’s breath showed 0.18 percent blood alcohol, police said. He was released after also being charged with driving with an open container of alcohol.
   • Jihad Forehand, 18, of Piscataway was charged with theft Oct. 24 after a Route 206 store’s security alleged that he had stolen merchandise and credited his own account with the false value of $525.95 when returning the items. He was released after booking.
   • Shane Howell, 20, of Hillsborough was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana during a New Amwell Road traffic stop on Oct. 19. He was released after paperwork was completed.
   • Christopher Marshall, 18, of Hillsborough was charged Oct. 16 with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana on Westminster Court after police received a complaint about possible criminal activity in the area. He was released after processing.
   • Zachary Falso, 23, of Somerville was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana Oct. 1 during a Route 206 traffic stop. He was released after also being charged with driving with an obstructed view.
   • Brandon Speel, 19, of Turnersville was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia during a Route 206 traffic stop Sept. 27. He was released after also being charged with driving with an obstructed view and driving while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
