SOUTH BRUNSWICK: Legion calls for ‘Jersey Boys’

By Jennifer Larkin, Special Writer
American Legion Post 401 in Monmouth Junction is looking for applicants to take part in its annual citizenship education program, officials said.
The organization is holding its 68th Jersey Boys State session, June 16-21 at Rider University in Lawrenceville, according to Post 401 Commander Gary Cooper.
The American Legion is America’s largest veteran’s organization with more than 3 million members in seven foreign countries, according to Mr. Cooper.
It advocates for veteran’s rights, assist congress, and benefit the community through various programs, “as a way to show the value of democracy,” said Mr. Cooper.
Last year more than 900 boys participated in this mythical 51st state, according to Mr. Cooper.
Administered for citizenship training purposes under the auspices of the American Legion, the attendees will reside at the university for one week and participate in a mock political state consisting of two opposing parties, according to Mr. Cooper.
To qualify a student must be a male high school junior living in South Brunswick who maintains a B or better average and receives the recommendation of the school.
Nominees should have the outstanding qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service to his school and community, according to Mr. Cooper.
Registration expenses associated with attending this program are paid by American Legion Post 401, according to Mr. Cooper.
”It is a participatory program where each attendee becomes a part of the operation of his local county and state government. They learn the entire political process from beginning to end and get to choose how they would like to become a part of it. Elections are held and some go on to the Boys State Program,” Mr. Cooper said. “American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students.”
South Brunswick applicants should respond with any inquiries by February, 2013, to Mr. Gary Cooper at [email protected], or, The American Legion Post 401 PO Box Monmouth Junction, NJ 08852.
