In a ceremony Friday night, Veterans of Foreign War Post 2290 remembered the day Dec. 7, 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, bringing the United States into World War II.
Pearl Harbor survivor Nicholas Alimecco, a member of Post 2290, received a standing ovation after he said a few words.
”It is such a pleasure for me to be here tonight,” he said. “It is hard to say what is in my heart. I do appreciate it, believe me. God bless you, and God bless America.”
Past Commander Andy Henkel said, “Though many of the survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor are no longer with us, we remember their contributions through service, devotion to duty and strive to emulate their selflessness and sense of patriotism daily. As we pause to remember the great Americans who perished in the attack, as well as those who subsequently defended our nation, we remember and remain inspired by their diligence, perseverance and sense of patriotic pride.”
Commander Fred Gorbatuk told the attendees, “We salute all service members who have given their lives to keep America free. In consideration of their sacrifice, we ask that all service members be given the thanks and respect that they so rightfully deserve.”
Members of the VFW post laid red, white and blue carnations onto a memorial along with a wreath and a flag symbolizing the loss. Outside, the firing squad gave a gun salute, and taps was played.
Those in attendance included Borough Council members Sherri Lynn, Ed Komoroski, Steve Szabo, Sue Asher and Lou Petzinger.
Also, Boy Scout Troop 193, Raritan Mayor JoAnn Liptak, Congresswoman Donna Simon, VFW District 15 President Cindy Dilks, past state President Cathy Glen Henkel, District 15 Commander Charles Goodyear and Kathy Marshall, president of the Ladies Auxiliary of New Jersey. Also in attendance were the American Legion 452, Tin Can Sailors and other veterans.
