An off-duty police officer shot and wounded a pit bull dog that came at the officer as he tried to remove it from Route 206, Hillsborough, at about 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Township police said a member of the Hillsborough Rescue Squad and the officer, who works in Hamilton Township, saw two pit bulls in danger of being hit in traffic between Amwell Road and Raider Boulevard.
The two got out of their cars, and approached the dogs, who became aggressive, police said. One dog bit the right foot of the officer, police said, and the officer drew his gun and fired one round, wounding the dog coming at him. Both dogs ran toward a nearby home, police said.
The officer suffered puncture wounds to his foot and was taken to Somerset Medical Center. The rescue squad member was not injured.
The dogs were subdued by St. Hubert’s animal control staffers, who took the wounded dog for veterinary care. The owner of the dogs was located. It is still being determined if the dogs have appropriate vaccinations, police said.
The matter is still being investigated, police said.
