ALLENTOWN: Five AHS students earn national honors

.   ALLENTOWN — Five Allentown High School students have been recognized as “commended scholars” in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, according to AHS Principal Constance DeNicola Embley.
The students are Harrison Adler, Michael Anthony, Jasmine Ragoowansi, Madison Schubert and Caroline Tkachuk.
These academically talented seniors will receive letters of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which has been conducting the competition for student recognition and college scholarships since 1955.
The five AHS students are among 34,000 commended students throughout the nation recognized for their exceptional academic promise based on the scores they earned on their 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, known by its acronym PSAT/NMSQT.
The scores earned in language arts, math and writing by the 34,000 commended students rank among the top 3 percent of the more than 1.5 million college-bound students in the United States who entered the 2013 competition.
Only the 16,000 national semifinalists, whose scores rank in the top 1 percent of all students taking the test, continue on in the competition for National Merit Scholarships. However, some commended scholars do become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
