PRINCETON: Trash pickup schedule updated

By Philip Sean Curran, Staff Writer
The first week of one Princeton saw the start of weekly residential trash collection.
The town has Ewing-based Central Jersey Waste collecting and hauling trash, open to all residents excepts those who live in townhouses and apartments and have dumpster service, according to a notice that went out to community last month. A street by street collection scheduled is available on the municipal website, at http://www.princetonnj.gov/waste_collection/GARBAGE%20PICK%20UP%20DAY%20LIST%20DLS.pdf.
The street-by-street schedule for pickups was updated on Jan. 2.
The change will be felt the most in the former township part of town, where residents have had to pay for a private hauler to dispose of their trash. The borough had had trash collection as a municipal service.
Officials have said residents can keep their private hauler if they wish. Participating in the municipal collection program means residents will have to pay extra for “back door” collection if they want that service, according to the municipality.
Among the rules of the municipal collection program, residents are limited to putting out four 32-gallon containers at the curbside anytime after 6 p.m. the day before trash is collected on their respective street. The town has stressed that bags will not be collected.
Also, the town has said residents can put up to two bulky items out for collection.
As for recyclables, that still will be handled by Mercer County.
