HILLSBOROUGH: Senior Corner column, week of Jan. 10

CHAPTER A
   At our January meeting, our 2013 officers were installed. Congratulations to all of them!
   We look forward to an active and enjoyable year. New president Lou Possemato encourages the membership to participate in trips offered.
   A reminder to all that our Chapter A bulletin board hangs in the meeting room near the rear door. Feel free to post any items of interest, i.e. newspaper clippings, pictures, jokes, etc., you would like to share with other members.
   Chapter A meetings start at 12:30 with doors open at 11:30, allowing time to review upcoming events. Refreshments are served after the meeting.
   Members may at any time contribute kitchen supplies — coffee, decaf, napkins, plastic sandwich bags, etc. All Hillsborough seniors are invited and may join the club at any meeting. Dues are $5 a year.
   Executive Board meetings are the fourth Wednesday of every month. President Possemato’s phone is 908-369-4474.
   Upcoming events:
   Tues., Feb. 12 — “Butterflies are Free” at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse near Clinton. Departure from Kohl’s parking lot at 10:15 a.m. Cost is $60 (less if driving your own vehicle).
   Thurs., Feb. 21 — Hillsborough Senior Bingo, hosted by Chapter B, at 11:30 a.m. at the Municipal Building. Hot dog lunch is $3. Ticket is required. An additional two cards may be played for a total cost of $5.
   Thurs., March 14 — “St. Patrick’s Day Celebration” at Doolan’s in Spring Lake. Departure from Kohl’s parking lot at 10 a.m. Cost is $82.
   Wed., April 10 — Appreciation lunch at the Municipal Building at 11:30 a.m. Bingo follows from 1 to 3 p.m. Cost is $12, refunded at event.
   Wed., April 24 — Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Tribute at Penn’s Peak, Pa. Family-style lunch served. Departure from Kohl’s parking lot at 10 a.m. Cost is $85.
   Our next trip to the Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City is on Monday, Feb. 4.The trip is open to members and non-members (over 21) for $30, with $25 returned. Departs at 9 a.m. from Kohl’s lot and returns at about 7:30 p.m. Call Jo at 908-359-6418 for reservations. Pay on bus.
   Senior room activities:
   Monday: Knitting from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
   Tuesday: Bridge from 9 a.m. to 1:30. Other card games from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
   Wednesday: Canasta from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Mah jongg from noon-4 p.m.

CHAPTER B
   In 2013 we look forward to an interesting and fun series of special events for Chapter B members. Our first regular meeting of the new year takes place on the second Thursday of the month, Jan. 10, at 12:30. Annual dues of $5 must be paid in January, if you have not already done so.
   At the January meeting, we will again be taking reservations for our April trip to Washington, D.C. A deposit of $140 will insure your reservation. The balance is $139. For those who have already reserved a spot, your balance of $139 is due. Insurance of $35 is optional.
   New members will be welcomed at the Feb. 14 meeting. Bingo is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21.
   Tickets to our March 13 trip to LiGreci’s Staaten, located in Staten Island, N.Y., for a St. Patrick’s fest are on sale for $73, first-come, first-serve. Your choice of salmon or one-half of a roasted chicken. Trip leaders are Sally DiDario and JoAnn Ivas.
   It’s never too early to think about warm weather and our spring luncheon, which will be held on April 11. Mark the date on your calendar.

   The center at 339 South Branch Road is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Its phone is 908-369-8700.
   Enjoy lunch for a suggested donation of $1.50 or more. (Price for guests under 60: $5.35). Call 908-369-8700 before 10:30 a.m. the day before to make a lunch reservation.

   Wed., Jan. 16 — Variety show by the Pettet Sisters, 10:45 a.m. Kristen Pettet sings and dances in Woody Allen’s movie, “Everyone Says I Love You.” Ashley’s theater credits include “The Sound of Music” and “Annie” national tours.
   Fri., Jan. 18 — What handwriting can tell you about a person.
   Mon., Jan. 21 — Center closed for holiday.
   Wed., Jan. 23 — Free hearing screenings by Total Hearing Care, 10:30 a.m.
   Thurs., Jan. 24 — Trip to the Montgomery Senior Center for Operation Shoebox service project with Earl Wilson and Rod Hirsch.
   Fri., Jan. 25 — Taste and learn about the yellow, baby macabu, manzano and petite bananas.
