MANVILLE: Principal Brunn chosen as ‘Citizen of the Year’

He’s seen a lot in 16 years at Manville High School

Dr. James Brunn, a lifelong resident of Manville and current principal of Manville High School, was named Citizen of the Year during the local government reorganization meeting Saturday.
”The Citizen of the Year award goes to someone who for most of their lives has done outstanding services to the borough of Manville,” Mayor Angelo Corradino said.
Mr. Brunn has lived his entire life in the borough. He graduated from Manville High School and Trenton State College and Seton Hall University for graduate courses and doctorate degree. His father served as a member of the Board of Education.
The award was presented for his dedication and devotion to the youth of the community.
Dr. Brunn, who seemed truly surprised, stood at the podium, speechless and emotional at times. He spoke with his usual sense of humor.
”If I knew this day was going to occur, I would have not shown up,” he said. “I say that in all due modesty. It is an honor to be the building principal of Manville High School.”
He added, “It’s tough to work in Manville. It is tough to live in Manville at times, but there is more good than there is evil. I have seen a lot in my 16 years as principal at Manville High School. One thing I can tell you, I have my share of critics, ladies and gentlemen, and you do, too, but no one ever builds a statue to a critic.”
He continued, “You do what you think is right, and I tried to live my life on that. I was raised by two wonderful people who I love dearly. They made me who I am today. What I have tried to do with every single one of my students and staff is to instill in them that they are better than they think they are. In fact, there is no one in this town who can’t do what they want. Our students don’t take a back seat to anybody.”
He said, “Manville is well represented in Somerset County, and people respect us. We have to respect ourselves. I respect our students. I respect the people of this town. I respect the people I work with. I don’t always agree with them, and they always don’t agree with me.”
Dr. Brunn said, “I will never let your children down in a sense that I will hold high standards and because I held high standards. I don’t deserve this award. There are better people than I, but I thank you for it. I will not minimize your gesture to me, and I will treasure this. I have to tell you I am in shock. You have the wrong James Brunn here.”
