A motorist, stopped for speeding on State Road Thursday in a possibly stolen vehicle, fled at high speeds out of Princeton before police detectives arrested him later in the day in Newark, authorities said.
Henry Belford, 19, of Newark, was being held on $50,000 bail at the Mercer County Detention Center on charges of eluding, hindering apprehension, receiving stolen property and possession of altered motor vehicle parts, police said. He has a court date Tuesday.
The man, pulled over around 2 a.m. in a black Land Rover, allegedly was driving with stolen license plates in a vehicle that had an altered vehicle identification number, indicative that the Land Rover might have been stolen, police said.
Mr. Belford fled at speeds in excess of 80 m.p.h., as police abandoned pursuit “due to the dangers involved,” authorities said in a news release announcing the arrest.
Mr. Belford later was spotted in Bridgewater on I-78, with local police there unable to stop him as the Land Rover was seen going toward Newark.
Princeton detectives, with the help of Newark Police, managed to identify the driver, with a warrant issued for his arrest.
He was tracked down to Cedar Avenue in the Brick City, although the Land Rover has not been recovered. police said.
