Lempert should be able to negotiate with university

James and Connie Camner, Princeton
We read with interest the article by Philip Sean Curran, concerning the PILOT agreement with the university.
We are relieved that, despite a baseless attempt to sideline her, Mayor Lempert will be at the forefront of the negotiations with Princeton University. Her husband’s position as a tenured professor was well known during last year’s campaign and has no bearing on her ability to advocate on behalf of the town.
Professor Alain Kornhauser has been an outspoken critic of the arts and transit development and has faced no repercussions. What is the conflict here? Mayor Lempert stands to benefit, as do the rest of us, from an increased university contribution.
Moreover, one of the reasons we supported Liz was the expectation that she would bring her considerable skills as a negotiator and conciliator to this crucial process for a united Princeton.
On the heels of news that consolidation has resulted in savings already 40 percent greater than projected, we urge the new council not to be distracted from the real progress that has been made and which needs to be made.
Clearly the leadership at the top is in a strong position as we go forward.
